And you’re magically lucky; you’ll find the North Pole.
The holiday cheer will give it away:
The singing, the dancing, the snow, and the sleigh.
Such noises bring smiles to each little face
Except for elf Carol, who feels out of place.
See Carol the Elf, she loves to sing
About Santa, and snowmen, and sleigh bells that ring.
She knows “Frosty” and “Rudolph” and of that she’s proud,
But Carol sings especially, terribly LOUD!
So loud that the other elves cover their ears
(Which is hard for an elf, everyone hears)
Carol sings while she works, she sings while she plays
She sings while she sleeps, you’d be totally amazed!
She even sings over Santa Claus’ orders!
The head elf, Bruno, pulled Carol aside.
“Carol,” he said, “I’ve tried and I’ve tried.”
“To teach you to whisper, or whistle, or hum
So we can keep working till Christmas does come.”
And Carol sniffed in her loud, elfie voice…
“I’m sorry, Bruno! I don’t have a choice.”
“When I think of Christmas, it fills me with glee,
And I’ve simply got to set my lungs free!
How can I possibly spread Christmas cheer,
If I don’t sing loud so others can hear?”
But when Frosty stopped in, to keep from a meltin’
Wouldn’t you know, who walked by a beltin’?
“HE SEES YOU WHEN YOU’RE SLEEPING; HE KNOWS WHEN YOU’RE AWAKE…”
And Frosty cried, “For goodness sake!
Who is making such an awful sound?
It’s sure to melt me to the ground!”
It’s sure to melt me to the ground!”
Bruno said, “It’s just elf Carol…”
She hid behind a peppermint barrel.
He called her out, with a voice sounding bossy.
“Carol,” he grunted, “apologize to Frosty.”
And Carol sniffed in her loud, elfie voice…
“I’m sorry, Frosty! I don’t have a choice.”
“When I think of Christmas, it fills me with glee,
And I’ve simply got to set my lungs free!
How can I possibly spread Christmas cheer,
If I don’t sing loud so others can hear?”
And Frosty looked down with his buttony smile
And said, “Singing is a gift, my child.”
“But you must learn to quiet down.
I’m off to eat a snow cone now.”
Poor Carol felt so sad and so lonely.
“So what if I’m loud? I know that if only…”
“The perfect Christmas job would come around
I could help Santa, no matter my sound.”
The next day was big in the North Pole
The annual “Naughty or Nice Superbowl”
Where Santa pulls children’s names from a hat
And the elves look in, wherever they’re at
They spy on those kids to see if they behave.
Which children are naughty, and which they will save.
This day is a fun one, for EVERYONE meets
Together in one room, with Mrs. Claus’ treats.
But it can get noisy when everyone shares
Their own opinions, in groups and in pairs
She must be strong, she must not crack.
No songs must be sung, no joyous greetings,
This is the most important of meetings.
So first up was Billy, from Kansas City
Santa found him wrestling his mothers’ small kitty.
“Naughty,” said Bruno, “that just isn’t nice.”
“But all children play!” another elf cries.
The yells went up all around the room
Till Santa heard with one big BOOM…
“Now everybody listen, and wait your turn!
Let’s see what Santa wants us to learn.”
Santa looked around, but couldn’t find
An elf of such a noisy kind…
So he decided “Nice” for Billy
For he was only acting silly.
They next moved on to Alabama
To check on Rosie, Blake and Hannah.
With every child, the room got louder
Yells and echoes all around her.
Carol stood and with one large SCREECH
Everybody took their seats.
“Stealing brother’s toys is awfully snotty,
Now raise your hands if you vote Naughty.”
“Santa,” she said, “Naughty wins.
Four hundred thirty votes to ten.”
And Santa heard her every word
From the back of the room, which was absurd!
“Who is this?” he HO HO Hoed.
“Who’s booming voice she just now showed?”
“It’s Carol,” Bruno said with a grin.
“The loudest elf there’s ever been!”
So Santa called her to his side
She was so happy, she could’ve cried.
And no matter how noisy that room became
Santa heard Carol’s voice, all the same.
When the Naughty/Nice list was completed
Santa asked all the elves to stay seated.
“Carol,” he said, “please lead us in song!”
And her sweet voice could do no wrong.
They sang, “Up on the Housetop” with giggles and yells
And ended with the favorite, “Jingle Bells.”
Santa said, “Carol’s the Queen of Spirit!
And I want every creature on this pole to hear it!”
“When I think of Christmas, it fills me with glee,
And Carol knows how to set her lungs free!
Now it’s her job to spread Christmas cheer,
She sings so loud, all others will hear!”
“From now on, all songs sung merrily
Henceforth are labeled, ‘Caroling!’”
And to this day, when jingle bells are rung
